Hale said the initial investigation has determined that the crash happened this morning, Thursday, August 31, 2017, at approximately 2:20 a.m., as a 49-year-old female pedestrian was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of DE Rt. 2 (Capitol Trail) in the area of Darwin Drive, walking in a southbound direction. As the pedestrian entered the right hand lane of Rt. 2, she stepped directly into the path of a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta, which was being operated by a 33-year-old Wilmington man. The operator of the Jetta swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the collision, however, he was unsuccessful. The front left of the Volkswagen then struck the pedestrian vaulting her onto the hood and into the windshield. The victim then came to rest in the right hand lane of the roadway. The operator of the Volkswagen was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop on the right hand shoulder.

The female pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing, not carrying a flashlight, and not utilizing a marked cross walk, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending the notification of her next of kin. Alcohol use on the part of the victim is being considered as a factor in this crash.

The operator of the Volkswagen was not injured. Impairment on his part is not being considered as a factor in this crash.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police. No charges are expected.
