Troopers Say Man Crossed Over Into Oncoming Traffic, Four To Hospital


Newark – Delaware State Police are currently investigating a serious motor vehicle crash, involving three vehicles which has sent four subjects to the hospital, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin.

Austin said the crash occurred at approximately 8:57 a.m., Monday, November 27, 2017 on Sunset Lake Road (DE Rt. 72), in the area of Broadleaf Drive, Newark. A 2000 Toyota Corolla, operated by a 20-year-old, Newark man was travelling Sunset Lake Road southbound, north of Broadleaf Drive, when for an undetermined reason he crossed into the northbound lanes, colliding head on with a 2015 Honda Odyssey, which was being driven by a 46-year-old Dover woman, according to Austin. After the initial impact, a 2014 Kia Forte, operated by a 40-year-old Smyrna man, which was following directly behind the Honda was also struck and sustained damage.

The operator of the Toyota had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition. The operator the Honda, along with two juvenile passengers from her vehicle, were also transported to the Christiana Hospital with undetermined, non-life threatening injuries. The operator of the Kia refused medical treatment at the scene.

The Honda Odyssey is mark with Goldey-Beacom College signage but is not affiliated with school, according to Goldey-Beacom President Gary Wirt.  It’s possible a an advertisement on a personal vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.

Original Breaking Story

Newark – At approximately 9:00 this morning, Monday, November 27, rescue crews from the Christiana Fire Company, along with Aetna Hose Hook, and Ladder,  New Castle County Paramedics and State Police  responded to Route 72 (Sunset Lake Rd) just north of Route 40 (Pulaski Highway) for a report of a collision with injuries.

The crash was initially reported to involve several patients, with one to be in cardiac arrest, according to Christiana Fire Chief Richard J. Perillo. The Chief said while responding, crews were advised that all patients were alert and breathing however one was trapped inside a vehicle. (Not the Van)

Upon arrival crews found a three vehicle crash with one subject heavily entrapped inside one of the vehicles, according to Perillo.

Christiana’s Engine 12, Ladder 6 (operating as L-12), along with Aetna’s Squad 9, Ambulances B6 and A10, and Deputy Chief 6 worked to free the one patient from the car for about 30 minutes. A total of 3 patients were transported to the Christiana Emergency Room, one with a trauma alert.

Witnesses at the scene indicated that the three occupants of the van suffered minor injuries during the accident. It’s believed that two of the vans occupants are included in the three transported, mentioned by Perillo.

Although the airbags of the third vehicle completely deployed, the driver refused medical attention at the scene.

Route 72 remained closed as Troopers investigated the accident.
