Why You Were Stuck On I-95 This Morning, Fire Displaces Seven

Wilmington – On Friday, April 13, 2018 at approximately 5:20AM Wilmington Fire Department units from the A Platoon responded to a residential structure fire, according to Battalion Chief John M. Looney.

Looney said the first arriving engine reported heavy smoke on the first and second floors of a 2-story middle of the row dwelling. Upon arrival of Battalion Chief Timothy Perkins, the initial incident commander, additional resources were requested for assistance. Firefighters made an aggressive fire attack and simultaneous search of the residence. The fire spread to adjoining dwellings through the attic space but was quickly contained by firefighters. Firefighters searched all residences and determined that the all occupants had escaped prior to fire department arrival.

The Incident Commander, Deputy Chief Jerome McCaffery, placed the situation under control at approximately 6:50 AM. The fire displaced one adult and six children, which the American Red Cross was on scene providing temporary shelter. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.

Approximately 30 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire. The following units responded: Engine 1,
Engine 5, Engine 6, Squad 4, Skyboom 2, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, F-1, D- 2, D-4, Battalion 12, St. Francis EMS, New Castle County Paramedics, Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Offices, Wilmington Licenses and Inspection, and Delmarva Power & Light.

The fire cause officials to close the I-95 NB/Delaware Avenue Off-ramp just as the morning commute was getting underway. As a result, traffic was backed up past the mall for most of the morning.
