Man In Critical Condition After Being Trapped In Trench On Old Baltimore Pike

At approximately 10:15 this morning New Castle County Paramedics along with surrounding agencies were dispatched to the 200 block of Old Baltimore Pike in Newark for a trench rescue, according to Paramedic First Class Yvonne T. Russell.

Russell said upon arrival, New Castle County Paramedics were informed of a large trench with one patient, 39-year-old male. The patient suffered injuries to his legs, along with hypothermia. It’s believed that a slab of concrete fell on the man’s legs trapping him, that has not been confirmed.

The patient was treated on scene while making attempts to rescue the patient. After 2 hours, the patient was transported to Christiana Hospital via Delaware State Police helicopter accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics. The patient was in critical condition at the time of transport.

Delaware State Police is investigating the incident.

Breaking Report

Newark – Rescue crews from the Christiana Fire Company have responded to the 200 block of Old Baltimore Pike for reports that a worker has fallen into a hole.

Crews on scene are reporting that a construction worker has fallen into a 10-foot deep trench and is injured. The New Castle County Special Operations HACSR Team is en route to the scene.

Crews are setting up a trench rescue operation. Command has ordered that Old Baltimore Pike closed in the area of the Girl Scouts building.

Update: 10:48 am Command has requested that Trooper 4 (Delaware State Poice Aviation) respond to the scene.

Update: 11:05 am Command has told Trooper 4 that it will be at least 30 more minutes before they will be utilized.

Update: Just before 12:00 the patient has been removed from the trench.
