Harrington– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2020, on southbound S. Dupont Highway (US 13) at State Fair Boulevard, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal Jason Hatchell.
Hatchell said the initial investigation has determined a 2011 Hyundai Tucson, driven by an 80-year-old Lincoln man was traveling eastbound on State Fair Boulevard approaching a posted stop sign at the intersection of S. Dupont Highway (US 13) southbound. A 2015 Chevrolet Express work van operated by a 46-year-old male from Bridgeville was traveling southbound on S. Dupont Highway (US 13) approaching State Fair Boulevard. The Tucson attempted to cross southbound S. Dupont Highway when it was struck by the Express van. The impact pushed the Tucson off of the roadway into the grass median which caused it to overturn and partially eject the operator and the front seat passenger, an 81-year-old female from Lincoln.
The driver of the Tucson and the front passenger were not properly restrained. They were both transported by Delaware State Police helicopters to a local area hospital. The front passenger was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Her name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.
Southbound S. Dupont Highway (Rt. 13) was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was cleared.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the crash should contact Cpl. Lane of the Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-698-8457.
