Claymont- On Sunday, August 30, 2020, at approximately 6:20 in the evening, officers from the New Castle County Division of Police responded to the unit block of North Avon Drive in the community of Ashbourne Hills, for a report of a domestic dispute.
Officials said arriving officers were met by a 57-year-old white male who was brandishing a firearm. The officers backed away from the residence and established a perimeter. As the incident unfolded, the suspect reengaged the officers on the perimeter while armed with firearms.
The suspect disregarded multiple commands to disarm himself and surrender to the officers. As a result, an officer discharged their weapon striking the suspect, police said Monday.
The suspect received medical attention from New Castle County Paramedics on scene and was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
This is an active and ongoing investigation by detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police, Criminal Investigation Unit, members of the Professional Standards Unit, and the Delaware Department of Justice, Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust.
The involved officer is a 3-year veteran and has been placed on administrative leave per New Castle County Division of Police policy.
