The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating last night’s fire in Georgetown that left a 37-year-old man in critical condition, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.
Chionchio said the blaze, reported shortly after 8:30, occurred in the woods off the unit block of Douglas Street. The Georgetown Fire Company and Sussex County Paramedics were dispatched to the area for a vegetation fire involving an injury. Upon arrival, the victim was found in the woods badly burned said Chionchio. A campsite was also on fire nearby. The victim was airlifted to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania suffering from severe burns. He is listed in critical condition.
Deputy fire marshals were called to the scene and are conducting the investigation with the assistance of the Georgetown Police Department. The origin and cause of this fire are currently under investigation as is the mechanism of injury, said Chionchio. There were no other injuries.
