Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Sunday afternoon on North DuPont Highway (Route 13) at the intersection with East Franklin Avenue, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.
Hatchell said on Sunday, January 2, 2021, at approximately 3:03 p.m., a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound on Route 13 approaching the intersection with East Franklin Avenue. The Malibu entered the right shoulder with the intent to make a right turn onto eastbound East Franklin Avenue. At the same time, a 2004 Toyota Corolla was in the left turn lane of southbound Route 13. The Corolla made a left turn across all northbound lanes of travel, attempting to turn onto eastbound East Franklin Avenue.
As the Corolla made the turn it entered directly into the path of Malibu, according to Hatchell. The Malibu then struck the passenger side of Corolla. The force of the impact forced both vehicles in a northeasterly direction where they eventually came to final rest.
The 28-year-old female operator of the Malibu was transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital where she was treated and released.
The 47-year-old operator of the Corolla was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital where he was admitted for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The 40-year-old male rear left rear seat passenger of the Corolla was not wearing a seatbelt and was airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Hospital for serious, life-threatening injuries. The victim succumbed to his injuries several hours later and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.
There were two additional passengers in the Corolla who were transported to Christiana hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 3:03 p.m., the New Castle County Paramedics, along with the Wilmington Manor Fire Company, Delaware Air Guard Fire Department, Minquadale Fire Company, Goodwill Fire Company of New Castle, Five Points Fire Company, and Christiana Fire Company, were dispatched to Route 13 northbound at Franklin Avenue in New Castle for the report of a motor vehicle collision with entrapment.
New Castle County Paramedics Public Information Officer Senior Sergeant Abigail Haas said first arriving fire department units arrived on scene to find two sedans that had collided, trapping three persons inside. Fire and Rescue crews worked for approximately 10 minutes to free all three.
Five total patients were transported to the Christiana Hospital, in Stanton, their conditions are as follows:
• An approximately 30-year-old male passenger was treated on scene by the New Castle County Paramedics for head, extremity, and possible internal injuries before he was flown aboard Delaware State Police helicopter in critical condition.
• An approximately 25-year-old male passenger was treated by the New Castle County Paramedics for extremity and possible internal injuries. He was in critical condition at the time of transport.
• An approximately 50-year-old male driver was treated by the New Castle County Paramedics for a head injury. He was in critical condition at the time of transport.
• 2 additional patients were transported to the hospital by basic life support (BLS) ambulance only.
The Delaware State Police is investigating the incident.
