Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Under Investigation in Middletown, Delaware
The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a tragic motor vehicle collision that occurred in Middletown yesterday evening, resulting in the loss of one life. The incident took place on May 24, 2023, at approximately 8:18 p.m. on Warwick Road, just south of Middleneck Road.
Officials said according to preliminary reports, two vehicles, a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Mercury Grand Marquis, were involved in a head-on collision near the solid double yellow lines. The exact circumstances leading up to the collision remain unclear, including the direction in which both vehicles were traveling before the incident and which vehicle crossed over the double yellow line into the oncoming lane.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, and the injured parties were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The driver of the Jeep, a 57-year-old woman from Virginia, and her passenger, a 63-year-old woman, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Similarly, the driver of the Mercury, a 24-year-old man from Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Tragically, the passenger of the Mercury, also a 24-year-old man from Delaware, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. However, authorities have not released the identity of the victim pending notification of his family.
In the aftermath of the collision, the roadway had to be temporarily closed for approximately seven hours to allow investigators to thoroughly examine the scene.
