Detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police have arrested three suspects following an investigation into the assault at Glasgow Park, which raised significant concerns about park safety in the community.
On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, Patrol Officers responded to Glasgow Park in Newark after receiving a report of an assault that had just occurred. However, it came to light that the response time was over an hour, leading to growing concerns about safety in the area. This incident, along with previous instances of a bomb threat, a shooting, and an alleged inappropriate incident involving a young child, spurred community members to question the safety of county parks.
In response to the community’s concerns, county leaders swiftly organized a community meeting to address the situation. One of the attendees, New Castle County Councilman David Tackett, emphasized the importance of safety in parks, stating that the well-being of neighborhoods hinges on people feeling secure while enjoying recreational spaces.
Councilman Tackett is expected to introduce a resolution at tonight’s council meeting to tackle the issue of park safety. The resolution aims to urge the Meyer Administration to immediately formulate a plan to address public safety concerns in New Castle County parks.
Following the assault at Glasgow Park, detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police took over the investigation. Their efforts and follow-up interviews led to the identification and subsequent apprehension of three suspects believed to be involved in the attack. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Gregory Brown of Newark, a 15-year-old male from Newark, and another 15-year-old male from New Castle.
The investigation confirmed that the incident was a random and unprovoked assault and robbery police said Tuesday. All three suspects were taken into custody without incident.
Gregory Brown faces charges, including one felony count of robbery in the first degree, one count of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, one felony count of conspiracy in the second degree, and one misdemeanor count of assault in the third degree. He was arraigned by the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and later released after posting a $48,000.00 secured bail.
The two juvenile suspects were also charged with similar offenses, including one felony count of robbery in the first degree, one count of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, one felony count of conspiracy in the second degree, and one misdemeanor count of assault in the third degree. The 15-year-old male from Newark was arraigned by New Castle County Family Court and released without bail, while the 15-year-old male from New Castle is currently awaiting his arraignment.
