Delaware State Police have arrested 45-year-old Matthew Campbell of Townsend, on multiple charges following a crash investigation on Wednesday night in Townsend.

Officials said on August 28, 2024, at approximately 9:40 p.m., troopers responded to a collision in the 100 block of Blackbird Forest Road, Townsend, involving a 2006 Infiniti G35 and a 2017 Harley Davidson FLS. Upon arrival, troopers determined that the Infiniti had struck the rear of the Harley Davidson as the motorcycle was turning onto a private driveway on Blackbird Forest Road.

The 45-year-old male operator of the motorcycle was airlifted to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter, Trooper 4. A 12-year-old passenger on the motorcycle was also transported to Christiana Hospital, with LifeNet 61 handling the transport. Both individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police reports.

The Infiniti’s driver, identified as Matthew Campbell, exhibited multiple signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident police said. During a search of Campbell’s person, police discovered a small glass jar containing a crystal-like substance, which was suspected to be crystal methamphetamine officials said Friday. While a trooper was inspecting the jar’s contents, Campbell intentionally blew into it, causing some of the substance to disperse. A subsequent search of the Infiniti revealed a loaded black handgun.

Campbell was transported to Troop 9, where troopers conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and tested the substance in the jar, which confirmed it to be approximately 0.1 grams of crystal methamphetamine. As a result of the investigation, Campbell was charged with several offenses, including possession of a firearm by a person prohibited who also possesses a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, two counts of vehicular assault in the third degree, possession of a controlled or counterfeit substance, and driving a vehicle under the influence of drugs. He also faced additional traffic violations. Campbell was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on his own recognizance.
