Police Identify Pedestrian Struck And Killed Tuesday Night

The Wilmington Police Department has identified the victim in a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Sunday morning in the city.

Police said 22-year-old Antonio Ortiz was struck by a vehicle at approximately 7:09 a.m. in the area of 4th and Jackson Streets. Officers located Ortiz at the scene and he was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

Officials said preliminary findings indicate Ortiz was in the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Authorities said the driver remained at the scene following the collision.

The incident is under investigation by the department’s Special Operations Division Traffic Unit. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have video of the incident to contact Senior Corporal Keith Johnson at 302-571-4415.
