Firefighters contained a morning apartment fire in Newark that sent multiple residents to the hospital and displaced occupants of a multi-unit building.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 9:01 a.m. on April 21, 2026, to the 800 block of Marrows Road at the Brookside Plaza Apartments in Newark. Units from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company responded with mutual aid partners to reports of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a three-story apartment building with visible smoke. All occupants had evacuated prior to crews entering the structure. Firefighters located an active fire in a first-floor apartment that had extended into a common hallway after the apartment door was left open. Crews quickly closed the door to confine the fire and prevent further spread while advancing lines to extinguish the flames.
Six individuals were evaluated by emergency personnel, including crews from New Castle County Paramedics. One person was transported with burn injuries, while three others were taken to Christiana Hospital Emergency Department for treatment of smoke inhalation. Two additional individuals declined medical treatment.
Firefighters brought the incident under control at approximately 9:27 a.m., after knocking down the bulk of the fire within 16 minutes of arrival. Marrows Road was closed during the response, and Delmarva Power was requested to secure utilities to the building. The American Red Cross was called to assist displaced residents with temporary shelter.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office.
