Delaware State Police arrested a 17-year-old Glasgow High School student Monday afternoon after a loaded handgun was found in his backpack following a fight at the school.
At approximately 1 p.m. on September 14, the School Resource Officer assigned to Glasgow High School on South College Avenue in Newark responded to a fight in a school hallway. The officer and school staff intervened and separated the students involved, including the 17-year-old.
During the investigation, police learned that the student had removed his backpack before the fight and that marijuana was reportedly inside, officials said. A search of the backpack resulted in the recovery of a loaded handgun and a small quantity of marijuana, according to police.
The student was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the fight. No other injuries were reported.
After being released from the hospital, the 17-year-old was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 2 and charged with felony possession of a firearm by a person under 21, felony possession of ammunition by a person under 21, felony possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of marijuana under 18.
Following arraignment by the Justice of the Peace Court, the student was committed to the Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families on an $87,000 cash bond.
