Newport  – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into a fatal crash that occurred east of Newport earlier today.

The incident occurred around 2:56 p.m.Thursday, December 15, 2016, as Edward Kowalski, 80 of Wilmington, was operating a 2011 Ford Escape eastbound on East Newport Pike (Rt. 4) approaching Fallon Avenue. For unknown reasons the Ford Escape veered right onto the shoulder and struck the curb on the south side of Rt. 4 and then drove off the roadway. The vehicle continued in a southeast direction traveling across a sidewalk and struck a tree with the front end of the vehicle and came to rest at the point of impact.

Edward Kowalski, the operator of the vehicle and sole occupant, was properly restrained. He was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision. It is unknown if the collision occurred was because of a medical event.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. East Newport Road in the area of the crash was closed in both directions for approximately 45 minutes while the crash was investigated and cleared.
