New Castle – Today, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) Police Department announced the extension of its “Name the Canine Contest” to the end of October to ensure all students who want to participate get the chance, according to Public Information Officer James Salmon.
Salmon said in June, the DRBA Police Department welcomed its newest department member, an adorable yellow Labrador mascot and announced a contest for local children to name the furry friend. Now through October local school children are encourage to submit names for the new mascot to [email protected]. All submissions must include “Name the Canine” in the subject line, name, address, and phone number. The contest, originally set to end on September 30, is now extended to October 31, 2017.
“We wanted to extend the contest to ensure all students who wanted to participate get that chance,” said Colonel Rick Arroyo, DRBA Police Administrator. “We received a number of great entries, but we realized that our mascot joined our department during the summer months when folks were busy with vacation plans and other activities.”
“Our canine mascot is very friendly, but he hangs his head sometimes because he’s a little sad and jealous that his friend, McGruff the Crime Dog, has such a great name and he doesn’t,” Arroyo added. “We’re hoping the public will continue to suggest names for our new colleague!”
A winner will be chosen after the contest closes October 31 and submissions are reviewed. The winner of the Name the Canine contest will receive a DRBA Police Department challenge coin, t-shirt and a round trip foot passenger ferry trip for four people.
This pleasant police pup has a remarkable story of how it joined the DRBA Police Department family. One of the agency’s police officers discovered the adorable yellow Labrador puppy while conducting security checks at the New Castle County Airport. Lacking a collar or any identification, the puppy was brought him back to department headquarters. The department’s rank and file decided the furry creature would be a perfect addition to the force.
Now dressed in a crisp blue police uniform, floppy hat and smile – this puppy is ready to make some new friends. The only thing missing is a name. This yellow Labrador mascot will not only establish an identity for the DRBA Police Department, but will promote a positive relationship between the DRBA Police Department and the community, especially children.
