24-Year-Old Man Dies In Police Custody In Dover


Dover – The Dover Police Department is currently investigating the death of a 24-year-old man after he was was arrested by officers for a shoplifting incident, according to  M/Cpl. Mark Hoffman, Public Information Officer.

Hoffman said John T. Manning III (24), was taken into custody shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 in reference to a shoplifting case at Sam’s Club, located at 1572 N. DuPont Highway without incident.

The arresting officer transported Manning to the Dover Police Department holding facility until he could be processed and arraigned on the pending charges. At approximately 2:03 p.m., Manning was found unresponsive and not breathing. Officer’s immediately rendered aid by performing CPR and notifying EMS officials. Manning was transported by medics to Bayhealth Kent General where he was later pronounced deceased. At the time, the cause of death is unknown as detectives await the Medical Examiner’s report.
