Truck Loaded With 1000 Batteries Catches Fire In Newark

Newark – At approximately 10:00 this morning firefighters from Aetna, Hose, Hook, and Ladder, along with the Christiana Fire Company responded to Tri-State Battery, located at 107 Albe Drive,  for reports of a vehicle on fire.

Upon arrival, crews found a tractor trailer, loaded with car and marine batteries, on fire in the parking lot. As crews worked to knock down the fire the batteries, loaded on pallets, began to collapse, according to Andrew Bowerson, Aetna’s Fire Chief.

Once the fire was under control crews, utilizing a forklift, safely offloaded approximately 1000 batteries, much to the delight of the firefighters.

It looked like we were going to have to offload all of batteries by hand when they starting falling over, said Bowerson.

HAZMAT crews from the Belvedere Fire Company responded to the scene to assist with the clean up.
