Wilmington Drug Investigation Results In “Officer In Trouble” Call, Troopers Respond, Two In Custody

Wilmington – On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at approximately 12:38, while the Wilmington Police Drug Unit were conducting a drug investigation in the 400 block of S. Van Buren Street officers advanced on a parked vehicle in the block in an attempt to secure the suspect, Anthony Hall, 35-years old, according to police.

Officials said prior to making contact with the suspect, the suspect exited the vehicle and began fleeing on foot, evading officers. Officers pursued the suspect and a struggle ensued at which time a second suspect identified as Sherman English, 54, appeared from inside a residence and attempted to evade officers by shutting the door on officers, according to police.

Meanwhile, Hall broke free from officers and continued fleeing on foot, police said. Officer, again pursued Hall and engaged in another struggle with him, attempting to place him in custody. At the same time, officers were continuing to struggle with English on a porch attempting to place him in custody.

Reports from the scene indicated that officials were concerned with an unchained Pit Bull that was on a nearby porch.

A K-9 was deployed during the incident where both suspects were subsequently taken into custody. During this incident, an ‘officer in trouble’ was transmitted on the radio when a hostile crowd engaged the officers as they made every attempt to take both suspects into custody.

Assisting officers and Troopers responded to assist with dispersing the hostile crowd. Hall was treated for a dog bite and released from Wilmington Hospital. An 11-year veteran Police Officer was treated for a torn bicep and released from Wilmington Hospital.

Anthony Hall was charged with Assault 2nd, Resisting Arrest, Drug Dealing (2 counts), Possession of Heroin, Conspiracy 2nd, Possession of a Firearm by Person Prohibited (2 counts), Possession of Ammunition by Person Prohibited and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Hall was committed on $90,000.00 cash bail.

Sherman English was charged with Assault 2nd, Conspiracy 2nd, Possession of a Firearm by Person Prohibited (2 counts), Resisting Arrest, Poss. of Ammunition by Person Prohibited. He was committed on $50,000.00 cash bail.

Police seized 663 bags of Heroin, 1.3 grams Cocaine, 8.5 grams of Marijuana, a 9mm Handgun, a M1 Rifle and approximately $800.00 cash, according to police.
