The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 1:02 p.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019, on Silverside Road at the entrance to the Talleyville Shopping Center.
The initial investigation has determined that a 2011 Nissan Altima, operated by a 21-year-old Wilmington man was traveling westbound in the right lane of Silverside Road, approaching the intersection with the Talleyville Shopping Center entrance. A 2017 Nissan Altima, operated by a 75-year-old Claymont man, was traveling eastbound Silverside Road., in the left turn lane and turned directly into the path of the 2011 Nissan, according to investigators. The driver of the 2011 vehicle was unable to avoid the 2017 vehicle, with the front end of his vehicle striking the right side of the 2017 vehicle.
The 2011 vehicle continued in a westerly direction, coming to a stop in the westbound lanes. The 2017 vehicle spun clockwise and traveled in a northwest direction before coming to a stop in the northwest corner of the intersection.
After impact, the engine compartment of the 2011 vehicle briefly caught fire but was extinguished and did not cause any injuries to the occupants.
The 75-year-old victim who was wearing a seatbelt was transported to the Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter where he succumbed to his injuries.
The 21-year-old driver and an 18-year-old female passenger, who were both seat belted were transported to the Wilmington Hospital with serious injuries. Impairment on his behalf is not being considered a factor in the collision.
Silverside Road was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
