Authorities Update Newark Bus Crash, 11 To Hospital, Over 200 Without Power

Newark – Just before 10:00 this morning rescue crews responded to Corporate Blvd and Lake Drive, Pencader Corporate Center, for reports of a vehicle accident involving a bus.

Upon arrival, crews found a transit bus off the roadway and a pickup truck into an electrical transformer.

“Aetna was initially dispatched for an automatic fire alarm on Lake Drive … this was apparently caused by a power outage from a vehicle striking a utility box.”, said Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder’s Deputy Chief Jeff Sands.

Immediately after the fire alarm call, Aetna was dispatched for the motor vehicle collision at the same location.

As a result of the accident, one patient was transported by Aetna ambulance with New Castle County Paramedics accompanying.

Ten other patients were transported as a precaution per their company policy by ambulances from Aetna and Christiana Fire Company, said Sands.

One vehicle struck an above-ground utility box causing a small fire. Sands said crews were able to contain the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher preventing the vehicle from catching fire until DELMARVA Power arrived to secure the power.

Once the power was secured the fire was extinguished.

The accident has knocked the power out in the Pencader Corporate Center and the surrounding area.

Delmarva is reporting 226 customers without power as of 11:00.
