Troopers: Woman Charged With DUI Number 5 After Crash

The Delaware State Police have arrested a Laurel woman after she was involved in a vehicle crash and found to be under the influence, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on August 1, 2019, at approximately 10:30 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the intersection of DuPont Boulevard and Berry Road in Frankford, for a crash. Upon arrival, Troopers learned that the operator of a Chevy Malibu failed to stop at the stop sign on Berry Street and collided into a Ford Truck, according to Jaffe.

Upon contact with the operator of the Malibu, 60-year-old Gloria J. Smith, Troopers detected an odor of alcohol and a DUI investigation ensued, added Jaffe. A computer check revealed that Smith had four previous DUI convictions, making this her fifth offense.

Smith and her 54-year-old female passenger were transported to the Nanticoke Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, a 23-year-old male from Maryland sustained minor injuries and was treated and cleared on scene by EMS.

Upon release from the hospital, Smith was transported back to Troop 4 where she was charged with the following:

5th Offense Driving Under the Influence
Vehicular Assault Third Degree (2 counts)
Driving While Suspended
Failure to Stop At a Stop Sign

Smith was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $7,501.00 cash-only bond.
