Just In: Route 1 Lanes Closed Overnight While Crews Work To Free Driver

Smyrna –  Just before 11:00 last evening rescue crews from the Citizens Hose Company of Smyrna along with crews from the American Legion Ambulance Service, Kent County Medics, Delaware State Police, and Trooper 4 responded to Route 1 southbound in the area of Twin Willows Road for a crash with injuries.

While en route, crews learned that one patient was trapped inside what callers identified as a tractor-trailer.

Upon their arrival, crews reported that one driver was trapped in the truck and a second patient in a second vehicle was also injured.

As crews worked to extricate the driver of the truck, Command reported a heavy debris field on the highway.

Just before Trooper 4 arrived on scene and landed on the highway, crews were able to free the driver from the truck and ready them for transport.

The patient was then transferred to Trooper 4 and transported to the Trauma Center at Christiana Hosptial with undetermined injuries.

It’s believed that the second patient refused medical treatment.

DNREC also responded to the scene to clean up approximately fifty gallons of fuel that had spilled on the roadway.

Route 1 SB was closed at the south Smyrna exit for an extended period of time as crews worked to clear the accident.
