Head-On Collision Closes Route 4 In Newark, Serious Injuries Reported

At approximately 5:25 Saturday evening, New Castle County Paramedics, Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company and Cecil County EMS were dispatched to the 400 block of Christina Parkway for a motor vehicle crash with report of entrapment, according to Paramedic Corporal Yvonne Russell.

Russell said upon arrival, New Castle County Paramedics found one patient needing advanced life support care. The patient, a 56-year-old-female, was confined to her vehicle for 15 minutes and removed from her vehicle by fire personnel. The patient suffered injuries to her leg. The patient was transported to Christiana Hospital via Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company ambulance accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics.

A second driver was injured, however, it is not clear if he was transported to the hospital.

At 6:15 Newark Police reported that Christina Parkway (State Route 4) was closed between South College Avenue and Elkton Road due to the crash. The road remains closed for investigation, clean-up, and treatment of the icy roadway by DelDOT. Please avoid the area and expect delays.

Update: At 7:40 Newark Police reported that the road has been treated and has been reopened.
