Explosion Lights Up Newark Sky, Thousands Without Power

Just before 7:30 Monday evening, we began receiving reports of an explosion and the sky over Newark lighting up.

Early reports indicated that an electrical transformer has exploded near the new Castle County Police Academy in the Brookside area of Newark.

Crews have responded to the scene. Police are directing traffic in the area due to traffic light outages.

At last check over 2,300 customers are without power.

Update: Delmarva Power is reporting that all by 39 customers have been restored.  Troopers reporting traffic signals back on.
