Bicyclist Struck And Killed On Route 896 In Newark Tuesday

Newark- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist that occurred this morning, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatch.

Hatch said the incident occurred on September 8, 2020, at approximately 9:41 a.m., when a bicyclist was traveling in the right turn lane of southbound South College Ave (DE 896). A Ford E350 van was traveling southbound South College Ave (DE 896) in the right through lane just south of Corporate Boulevard. The Ford merged into the right turn lane directly in the path of the bicyclist. The Ford attempted to avoid the collision, but the front on the van struck the rear of the bicycle. The bicyclist was subsequently ejected.

The bicyclist, a 59-year-old male from Newark, DE was flown to Christiana Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the van, a 44-year-old male from Newark, DE was properly restrained and did not sustain injuries.

Southbound South College Ave (DE 896) was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
