Police: WAWA Carjacking Suspect In Custody After Fleeing

New Castle– The Delaware State Police have arrested 20-year-old Saul Rivera-Montalvo of Wilmington, for robbery and related charges following a carjacking and other criminal offenses, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said the incident occurred at approximately 8:03 a.m., June 15, 2021, in the parking lot of Wawa, located at 4000 North Dupont Highway, New Castle. The 52-year-old male victim parked his 2012 Nissan Altima and exited the vehicle in an attempt to retrieve an item from the rear seat. The victim was approached by an unknown suspect who displayed a knife and demanded the keys to his vehicle said Hatchell. The victim complied and the suspect fled in the stolen car. The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.

On June 21, 2021, the suspect, Saul Rivera-Montalvo was observed operating the stolen Nissan Altima police said. Troopers initiated a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle, but the suspect fled, and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit was terminated due to reckless driving and concern for public safety.

Hatchell said on June 24, 2021, Saul was identified as a suspect in the theft of a Mazda CX-9 from the Christiana Mall. On June 25, 2021, troopers located the suspect operating the stolen Mazda and were involved in a second vehicle pursuit. This pursuit again was terminated due to reckless driving and public safety.

On June 28, 2021, Wilmington Police Department located Saul in the stolen Mazda and was able to apprehend take him into custody without incident.

Saul was transported to Troop 2 where he was charged with the following crimes:

Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)
Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
Theft of a Motor Vehicle (Felony)
Disregarding a Police Officer Signal (Felony) – 2 count
Numerous Traffic Violations
Saul was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $55,100 cash bond.
