Police: Newark Armed Robbery Suspect Facing Littering Charges

A Newark man is facing multiple charges after an armed robbery Thursday, according to Newark Police Spokesman M/Cpl William Smith.

Smith said on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at about 12:07 hours, Newark Police were called to Baymont Inn, located at 630 South College Ave, for a report of a robbery.

During the robbery, the suspect entered the hotel and displayed a handgun to the clerk, according to Smith. After the suspect made threatening statements, the clerk turned over an undisclosed amount of cash. He then fled the area in the direction of South College Ave and the Christina Parkway.

Based upon witness statements and surveillance video, Newark Police detectives identified the suspect in the Baymont Inn robbery as Chavez Waters, 34 of Newark, said Smith.

Later on Thursday, around 4:30, Waters was arrested in the area of Fairway Road located in Newark. He was transported to Newark Police Department Headquarters where he was charged with:

Robbery 1st
Poss. of a firearm during the commission of a felony
Aggravated Menacing
Drug Dealing
Terroristic Threatening
Littering
He appeared before New Castle County Justice of the Peace Court 11 and received $135,000 cash bail.
