Police: 12-Year-Old Ordered Food, Stole Delivery Driver’s Vehicle Near Edgemoor

New Castle County Police are investigating a vehicle theft that occurred Thursday, according to officials.

Authorities said that patrol officers were dispatched to the Paladin Club Apartments, off of Edgemoor Road, in reference to a vehicle theft that had just occurred.

First arriving officers arrived, observed a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen vehicle driving through the complex. When officers activated their emergency equipment the vehicle slowed and the driver fled on foot, according to police. The vehicle then drifted and came to a stop after striking a patrol vehicle.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter to search for the male suspect and were able to apprehend him in a neighboring complex, the Colony North Apartments.

Investigators determined that the 12-year-old boy called in a food order from a local Chinese Food Restaurant. When the driver approached the door of the apartment the boy jumped into the delivery man’s vehicle and drove off, according to police.

The boy was taken into custody and transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters was he arrested and charged with one count of Felony Vehicle Theft, one count of Misdemeanor Resisting Arrest, one count of Reckless Driving and one count of Leaving The Scene of a Property Damage Accident.

He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released to his parent on $1450 unsecured bail.
