Fire Crews Have Been Ordered Out Of The Building, Third Alarm Called At University Of Delaware Lab Fire

Newark –  Fire crews from around New Castle County are on scene battling a three alarm fire inside the Mckinly Lab on Delaware Avenue.

The fire is believed to have started in the basement, that’s where crews from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder have focused their efforts. Crews from Christana Fire Company were sent to upper floors where they encountered heavy smoke.

Additional crews from area fire companies were sent to the roof where they knocked holes in the building.

Smoke was pouring from the roof as firefighter tried to locate the fire. HAZMAT crews have been called to the scene. It’s believed that hazardous chemicals are in the building.

Radio traffic indicates that fire crews are knocking in doors to locate additional fire.

Delaware Avenue is closed between S College Ave and Academy. Main Street has heavy traffic.

UPDATE  – At 2:55 a third alarm has been sounded and Crews from Cecil County have been called to the scene.

UPDATE – At 3:00 Newark Command has ordered all firefights out of the building. It is unclear why they have been pulled out at this time.

UPDATE – At 3:04 Additional medics have been requested to the scene.
