Amtrak Train Collides With Freight Train, 2 Dead, 70 Injured

Cayce, SC – At around 2:35 this morning, Sunday, February 3, 2018, Amtrak passenger train 91, headed to Miami from New York has crashed in South Carolina, killing at least 2 and injuring approximately 70 others, according to South Carolina Emergency Management Spokesman Derrec Becker.

The injured were all transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from scratches and bumps to severely broken bones, according to Captain Adam Myrick with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office.

The Amtrak train was carrying 8 crew members and 139 passengers when the train collided with a CSX train near Cayce, SC., according to early reports from the scene.

Earlier reports that the CSX train was carrying diesel fuel were incorrect. The 5000-gallon fuel spill is believed to be the fuel from the locomotives themselves.
