Troopers Identify Man Killed In Head-On Collision

Georgetown – The Delaware State Police have identified Thomas D. Clarke, 63, of Georgetown as the operator of a Chevrolet pickup truck that was killed in the crash that occurred at approximately 2:46 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, on W. Piney Grove Rd., south of E. Trap Pond Rd in Georgetown.

Georgetown – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 2:46 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, on W. Piney Grove Rd., south of E. Trap Pond Rd in Georgetown.

The initial investigation has determined that a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, operated by a 63-year-old Georgetown man, was traveling northbound on W. Piney Grove Rd., approximately .4 miles south of E. Trap Pond Rd., when for an unknown reason he traveled off the right edge of the roadway onto a grassy area. The Chevrolet re-entered the roadway and traveled across the center line into the opposing lane of travel, directly into the path of a 2006 Jeep Cherokee, operated by a 53-year-old Georgetown woman. The operator of the Jeep was unable to avoid the Chevrolet, resulting in the vehicles colliding in the southbound lane of travel.

The operator of the Chevrolet, who was unrestrained, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Jeep, who was properly restrained, was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Georgetown – At approximately 2:50 this afternoon rescue crews with the Georgetown Fire Company, along with Troopers from the Delaware State Police responded to the 19000 block of West Piney Grove Road in Georgetown for reports of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment.

Upon arrival, Troopers reported that two people were seriously injured, one of whom was trapped.

As rescue crews arrived on scene they reported two vehicles were in the roadway and began working to extricate the trapped patient. At 3:09 the patient was removed from the vehicle transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

At 2:27 Delaware State Police reported that they were currently on scene of a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 2:47 p.m., on W. Piney Grove Road, west of E. Trap Pond Road in Georgetown.

“Motorists will experience delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.”

The investigation is in the early stages with further information being released as it becomes available.
