Teen Fights Off Purse Snatcher Near Elsmere

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted purse snatching that took place Tuesday afternoon in Wilmington.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m., Tuesday, January 1, 2019, in the 1600 block of Kirkwood Highway, as an 18-year-old Elsmere woman was walking westbound on the sidewalk, in front of the VA Hospital. A male suspect walking eastbound approached the victim and attempted to engage her in a conversation. The victim refused to do so and continued walking. The suspect then approached the suspect from behind and attempted to grab her purse, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Michael Austin. A struggle over the purse ensued, with the victim retaining possession. The suspect then fled on foot across Kirkwood Highway, towards Maple Avenue. The victim was treated at an area hospital for a laceration to her hand, sustained during the altercation.

The suspect was described as white male, 20-30 years of age 5’7″-5’9″, clean-shaven with short hair.
