Small Fire Prompts Evacuation Of McVey Elementary School, No Injuries Reported

Just before 10:30 this morning, firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder, along with members from the Christiana, Mill Creek, and Cranston Heights Fire Companies were dispatched to McVey Elementary School, located at 908 Janice Drive, for reports of a fire.

As crews responded to the scene, police officers and staff evacuated the students from the building. It’s believed that some, if not all of the students were relocated to St. Paul Lutheran Church next door to the school.

Upon their arrival, firefighters reported that a small fire inside a girl’s bathroom had been extinguished and placed the incident under control. One the school was ventilated the students and staff were allowed back into the school.

Fire Marshals are investigating to determine how the fire started.

Taylor Green, Christina School District Public Information Officer, released the following statement regarding the incident.

“At approximately 10:24 AM this morning, February 14, there was a small fire in a bathroom at McVey Elementary School. The building was evacuated immediately without incident. The evacuation lasted for approximately 90 minutes and students and staff were safely relocated to another site during this time. Students returned to school and classes resumed.

We want to thank the police and the Fire Marshal for their swift response today. We also want to thank our students and staff for remaining calm and cooperative during this incident.”
