Just In: House Fire Near UD Campus Closes Delaware Avenue In Newark

Newark – Just after 6:00 this morning firefighters from Aetna, Hose, Hook, and Ladder, along with mutual aid from area fire companies responded to W Delaware Avenue and Orchard Road for reports of a house on fire.

While en route crews learned that a passerby was reporting a house on fire in the area.

Upon their arrival, crews reported fire showing from a home in the unit block of West Delaware Avenue. Crews immediately began their attack on the fire while simultaneously searching the home for occupants. Crews reported heavy smoke inside the home as searched.  Crews later reported that the primary and secondary search of the home met with negative results. No occupants were found in the home.

Newark Command, Atena’s Deputy Chief A.J. Schall, reported that crews were working a kitchen fire that had extended into the second floor of the two and a half story home.  Schall placed the fire under control just before 7:00 am. No injuries have been reported.

W Delaware Avenue between South Main Street and South College Avenue was closed during the incident. The road has since been reopened.
