Police: One Dead After Box Truck Collides With Scooter In Lewes

Lewes- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a scooter that occurred earlier this morning.

The incident occurred on October 18, 2019, at approximately 6:52 a.m., when a 2018 Freightliner 6 wheel box truck was traveling southbound on Clay Road approaching the intersection of Kings Highway with a posted stop sign.

A 2012 Chongqing Manufacturing Scooter was traveling westbound on Kings Highway approaching the intersection of Clay Road. The operator of the box truck slowed but failed to stop at the posted stop sign, entering the intersection directly in front of the scooter, police said. The operator of the scooter swerved to the left in an effort to avoid the box truck but was unable. As a result, the right front of the box truck struck the right side of the scooter within the intersection.

The operator of the box truck, a 22-year-old male from Delmar, Maryland was properly restrained and did not sustain injury.

The operator of the scooter, a 56-year-old male from Lewes, Delaware was transported to the Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Kings Highway in the area of Clay Road was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Lewes- The Delaware State Police are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:53 a.m., on October 18, 2019 on Kings Highway at Clay Road in Lewes.

As a result of the crash and ongoing investigation, Kings Highway in the area of Clay Road, Lewes will be closed. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.

Rescue crews from the Lewes Fire Department, Sussex County Medics, and Trooper 2 were dispatched to the scene for reports of a pedestrian being struck.

The patient was rushed to Beebe Medical Center in very serious condition via ambulance. Trooper 2 was canceled by medics.
