On May 11, 2024, at approximately 2:39 PM, an officer from the Laurel Police Department, while patrolling northbound on Sussex Highway near Sycamore Road, observed a gold Toyota 4-Runner driving erratically.
The 4-Runner narrowly avoided a collision with the vehicle ahead and made an unsafe maneuver by swerving onto the right shoulder to overtake stopped traffic. During this maneuver, it collided with another vehicle exiting a driveway, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles and a minor head injury to the driver of the second vehicle police said.
The officer attempted to manage the situation by blocking the road to guide the involved vehicles into a nearby parking lot for safety and to clear the debris. However, the driver of the 4-Runner drove behind a building, abandoned the vehicle, and fled on foot according to authorities.
A passenger then took control of the driver’s seat and, when officers tried to stop the vehicle, initiated a high-speed chase reaching speeds over 90 mph. The chase concluded when the vehicle was trapped on a dead-end dirt road behind a farmhouse, leading to the apprehension of the driver, Kenya Wynder (Left), 28, of Bridgeville, after a short foot pursuit. The passenger was detained without further incident.
Kenya Wynder faces several charges including Reckless Endangering First Degree, Disregarding a Police Officer Signal, Conspiracy Third Degree, Resisting Arrest, Leaving the Scene of an Injury Traffic Collision, Reckless Driving, and 24 other traffic violations. She was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and is currently held at Sussex Correctional Institution on $8,320 secured bail.
The passenger, Shaquea Jones (Middle), 26, of Seaford, was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and also held at Sussex Correctional Institution due to violations of probation.
The initial driver at the time of the collision remains at large. Officers are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area and have obtained a screenshot to assist in the ongoing investigation (Right).
