The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced that portions of the trail system at Cape Henlopen State Park will be temporarily closed during the coming weeks to allow for maintenance and repairs.
Officials said the Junction and Breakwater Trail will close on weekdays beginning Monday, March 9, and is expected to remain periodically closed for about three weeks. The trail will reopen to the public on weekends during the construction period.
The work will include replacing fencing along the causeway, regrading the edges of the trail, and resurfacing sections with stone dust. During the project, the trail will be inaccessible on weekdays from the Outlets parking area north to the connection in the Hawkseye community.
Once repairs on the Junction and Breakwater Trail are completed, crews will shift work to the Gordons Pond Trail. That trail is expected to close on weekdays for approximately two weeks to repair small sections that were breached by high tides. During the work, the trail will be closed from the Gordons Pond Parking Area north to the southern limit of the elevated walkway from Herring Point.
State officials said both trails will reopen to the public each weekend while the projects are underway. Additional information and updates about the closures are available through the Delaware State Parks website and the park’s social media pages.
