A Pennsylvania man accused of assaulting and strangling a woman in Newark earlier this year has been extradited to Delaware and is being held in lieu of bail.
According to the Newark Police Department, the investigation began on February 3, 2025, after a woman reported that 25-year-old Christian Womack assaulted her at a business in the 600 block of South College Avenue.
Police said that during an argument, Womack allegedly grabbed the victim by the hair and neck and strangled her, causing difficulty breathing. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and later released.
Investigators learned that Womack was also allegedly in possession of the victim’s vehicle. The victim told police she had informed him he was not authorized to use the vehicle and repeatedly requested its return, but he refused. During the investigation, the victim also reported a separate incident that had occurred several days earlier in which Womack allegedly struck her multiple times, causing injuries observed by the investigating officer. Police further alleged that Womack repeatedly called and texted the victim, causing alarm and distress.
As a result of the investigation, Newark Police obtained warrants charging Womack with strangulation, third-degree assault, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and harassment.
On February 4, 2026, Womack was arrested by the Pennsylvania State Police while in possession of the vehicle and was taken into custody on unrelated charges in Pennsylvania. He remained incarcerated there until being extradited to Delaware on June 8, 2026, to face the Newark charges.
Following arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 2, Womack was issued $13,000 cash bail on the Newark charges and an additional $3,000 cash bail on an unrelated capias. The court also issued a no-contact order prohibiting contact with the victim and ordered that he be placed on GPS monitoring if released on bail.
Womack was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of bail.
