Delaware State Police have identified 19-year-old Malachi Waters of Millsboro as the suspect involved in a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning. The incident left a 26-year-old man dead.
Officials said at approximately 10:47 a.m. on June 4, 2024, officers from the Millsboro Police Department and Delaware State Police responded to a shooting on Saint Thomas Boulevard within the town limits of Millsboro. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began life-saving efforts. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Given the severity of the case, the Millsboro Police Department requested assistance from the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit to take over the investigation. Preliminary findings indicated that Waters approached the victim, brandished a firearm, and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a vehicle police said Wednesday.
Shortly after the incident, detectives spotted the suspect’s car. With support from the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team, troopers intercepted the vehicle near the Delaware-Maryland border in Delmar. Waters attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended in Delmar, Maryland.
On June 10,2024, Waters was extradited to Delaware. He was taken to Troop 4, charged with Murder 1st Degree (Felony) and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony). He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $1,060,000 cash bond.
