Major Traffic Shift Coming To I-95 This Weekend

A major traffic shift is scheduled to impact northbound Interstate 95 in New Castle County this weekend.

Transportation officials announced that a new traffic pattern will take effect beginning Saturday evening, April 25, and continue through Sunday morning, April 26. The changes will involve multiple lane closures, detours, and reductions along the northbound lanes, particularly in the area of Route 1 and the Airport Road interchange.

Beginning at 6:00 p.m., Exit 5A from northbound I-95 to Airport Road will be closed and detoured, with motorists directed to use Exit 5B. At the same time, a single right lane closure will be in place on northbound I-95 near Route 1. By 8:00 p.m., traffic will be reduced to three through lanes.

Additional restrictions will take effect late Saturday night. At 11:00 p.m., northbound I-95 will be reduced to a single through lane between Route 1 and the Airport Road Exit 5A, significantly limiting traffic flow through the corridor.

All lanes and ramps are scheduled to reopen by 10:00 a.m. Sunday.

Officials noted that a concrete barrier will remain in place separating the two left lanes from the three right lanes, with updated pavement markings guiding drivers ahead of key decision points.

Motorists are advised to expect delays, follow posted detours, and use caution while traveling through the work zone.
