The man charged in the fatal shooting at ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital has been returned to Delaware to face prosecution.
According to the Delaware Department of Correction, 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey was booked into the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center Tuesday following his extradition from Pennsylvania. Wallace-Bey was arrested in Philadelphia hours after the June 16 shooting and faces charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and related offenses.

Wallace-Bey was hire by the hospital in February 2026 as a participant in a six-month, non-clinical information technology internship program. Officials said interns were primarily assigned to the Newark campus but could be deployed to other ChristianaCare facilities as needed. On the day of the shooting, participants were working on a scheduled IT project in the basement IT office at Wilmington Hospital.
Investigators said the shooting was a targeted and isolated incident. Ethan Hillman, 19, of Smyrna, was killed. A second 19-year-old male was wounded during the incident.
Last month ChristianaCare said their internal review showed Wallace-Bey was neither fired nor disciplined prior to the shooting. Officials said he became involved in a verbal disagreement with the two victims that morning, told a senior IT employee he wanted to leave for the day, and was granted permission to do so. Hospital officials said he left voluntarily and was expected to return to work the following day.
Because Wallace-Bey remained an active participant in the internship program, officials said his employee badge continued to provide authorized access to the campus. Investigators said he later returned through an employee entrance before the shooting occurred.
Wallace-Bey was arrested in Philadelphia on the day of the shooting after investigators tracked him to the city. He remained jailed there until he was extradited back to Delaware on Tuesday.
