Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Elkton Road in Newark

A motorcyclist was killed and another driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday night on Elkton Road in Newark, according to police.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:01 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at the intersection of Elkton Road and Thorn Lane.

Newark Police officers responding to the scene found a motorcycle and sedan involved in the collision. Crews from Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Fire Company and New Castle County Paramedics also responded and provided medical care.

The driver of the sedan was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and admitted with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The motorcycle operator was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the rider’s identity pending notification of family members.

According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcycle was traveling southwest on Elkton Road while the sedan was traveling northeast on the same roadway. Police said the sedan began making a left turn toward Thorn Lane when the motorcycle struck the passenger side of the vehicle.

The Newark Police Department’s Traffic Response Unit responded to investigate the fatal collision. The roadway remained closed in the area for approximately four hours overnight while investigators worked at the scene.
