Almost Five Years After Killing Mitchell Learns His Fate

A Newark man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2021 fatal shooting of a 19-year-old New Castle resident in Wilmington.

Authorities said 19-year-old Dmajah Tickles was shot in the 2300 block of Carter Street at approximately 9:10 p.m. on May 19, 2021. Officers with the Wilmington Police Department responded and located Tickles suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

During their investigation, detectives developed 39-year-old Tramont Mitchell as a suspect. Shortly after an indictment from a New Castle County Grand Jury was secured, Mitchell was arrested at his Newark residence on March 2, 2022. He was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of possession of a weapon by a person prohibited.

In 2024, a jury in Delaware Superior Court found Mitchell guilty of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A judge later convicted him on a severed charge of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

On February 13, 2026, Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 50 years.
