Police Say Two Shot In Newark Saturday, Victim’s Name Released

The New Castle County Police have issued an update to their statement regarding the Newark homicide that occurred early Saturday.

Officials said Detectives from the County Criminal Investigations Unit, Homicide Squad have identified the deceased as 26-year-old Melvin Collins.

Earlier today officials said that at approximately 12:47 A.M., officers responded to the Shoppes of Village Square shopping center for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, Officers discovered multiple gunshot victims. Collins was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In their update police said Detectives have determined that another male was struck by gunfire and was transported to a local area hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Rescue crews from Aetna, Hose, Hook & Ladder and New Castle County Paramedics were dispatched to the scene after 911 dispatchers received reports of multiple patients shot at the scene, according to reports.

Initial reports that a third victim had been shot appear to be unfounded based on the police department’s latest update.
